The current Tracing nerves series (2024) is an ongoing exploration into the connections between the processes of gestural mark making and the subsequent evocation of a sensation or feeling stimulated from abstract figurative forms. The related discussions consider the perceived aesthetic value of an image and its inherent uniqueness that elevates its status so that it is observed with greater inquiry. Fundamentally whether a drawing can stimulate a feeling via the information embedded in it and if it being the only example in existence plays a part in its value.
The work is predominately monochromatic to minimise the distraction from additional elements and focuses on the nuances of two dimensional printed textures and shapes that suggest form and life. The primary source material for the work is figurative as representative of the essence of human nature and deals with our obsession to understand our existence and reality. For us to feel alive we need to experience and react to something; our nerves provide us with knowledge of the outside world and these are the conduits of stimulation. The work is imbued with a trace of the subject, its essence, and also its uniqueness, providing the viewer with a stimulus to make a connection and feel.
